BREAKING: MARGARET THATCHER DIES OF STROKE

Former first female British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Iron Lady) has died aged 87 following a stroke, her spokesman Lord Bell has said.

Lord Bell said: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning.
"A further statement will be made later."

In a statement on the Downing Street Twitter feed, David Cameron said today: "It was with great sadness that l learned of Lady Thatcher's death. We've lost a great leader, a great Prime Minister and a great Briton."
Buckingham Palace said the Queen was sad to hear the news of the death of Baroness Thatcher and Her Majesty will be sending a private message of sympathy to the family.

Baroness Thatcher was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990. She was the first woman to hold the post.
Born Margaret Roberts in Grantham in 1925 she went on to become the Conservative MP for Finchley, north London in 1959.
She subsequently became Education Secretary before successfully challenging former prime minister Edward Heath for her party's leadership in 1975.
Mrs Thatcher became Prime Minister on 4 May 1979.
She won general elections in 1979, 1983 and 1987.
She retired from the Commons in 1992.
